The Lightning are taking a chance on youth with 2 of our junior riders being promoted to the UL side for this coming season. It may be a massive gamble but we thought it was worth it as we like to promote home grown talent especially if they have come through our academy. Those 2 riders are Dan Ballard and Sam Ives. Dan only had a part season with Whitby but ended with an average of approaching 7. He will start at the tough number 2 position but we think he can handle it. Sam had a decent season with Glynogwr and when we looked at riders to complete our side we thought we might as well use one of our own rather than raid the transfer list. Both will have coaching sessions with our coach David Bedford before the season starts.
Two GP riders spearhead our side with World number 3 Ray France continuing as number 1 and Captain. GP debutant Michael Plant will ably assist Ray at the top of the order as he has done for the past 2 seasons. I know Michael would love the number race jacket so that should give Ray the incentive he needs to try and keep it for himself.
Then we have a couple of Wills, Huntsman and O'Brien. Both rode well last season to post over 6 point averages and will be looking to kick on push to 7 point plus. They will be the engine room of the team and we will decide after the pre season challenges who will ride at 3 and who at 4 for the league matches.
Our team is completed by Steve Conway. We considered options from the transfer list and made some enquiries before making an offer to Steve. He is only 21 but will start as our senior reserve. We think he can easily increase his average to over 5.
A slightly different route to last season's team building but we think we can give it a good crack at defending our title.
