The Polish promotion of Jakub Baran in the place of UL winning Kryznowek certainly worked a treat early on with his victory in heat one getting Poland off to the very best of starts, but while Baran was receiving the spoils, West Europe captain Knapke had some work to do on his machinery after a fall, the skipper himself seemed ok. Three races in though and the Celtic Nations joined Poland in the lead after two straight wins took both teams to 7. West Europe’s nightmare start continued and they were pointless after 3.
Tides turned in heat 4 though with Xavier Blanc getting the first points on the board for West Europe after besting former Cats pair Tercjak and Reay, with Tercjak’s second putting Poland clear once more, and this was followed up by a heat win for Knapke showing no ill effects from his fall and delivering a second successive race win, while Tercjak’s fall and Bridges’ second tied scores up at the top with both the Poles and the Celts level on 9, and West Europe and England tied on 6.
Poland took another step away in 6 courtesy of Narozny’s win and Treadwell’s second last place, and they nudged further ahead when Irzyk beat Finch to second place on the last bend of heat 7.
Heat 8 saw McCurdy’s win put more pressure on the leading poles with Baran unable to repeat his heat 1 heroics, while Blanc’s second hauled them level with England once again with Bedford trailing in last.
Baran again struggled in heat 10, while unfortunately for the Poles Bridges took the chequered flag and delivered 3 points, bringing them to within a point of the poles. After 10 races; Poland 18, Celtic Nations 17, England 13, West Europe 12.
By heat 14 Poland had edged out a 5 point lead over the Celts, but England had maneuvered themselves into second spot, through a second race win for World Champion Liam Reay, with England pulling level after a race win from Ambrose in heat 15, while Baran finished last for a second time.
Heat 16 saw Poland pull away yet again, with Irzyk winning and English compatriot Wood finishing last, meaning with 4 races to go Poland lead with 28, England 25, Celtic Nations 24, West Europe 19. 4 races to go, and everything to play for between the top 3, with West Europe certainly not outclassed.
Heat 17 saw a disconsolate Baran with the weight on his shoulders trudging back to the pits, his point almost gifted to him by a fall for Treadwell meaning England pulled back to within a point, with Bedford winning ahead of West Europe’s Juttke, who closed to just 3 behind the Celtic Nation’s third place.
Narozny brought the smiles back to the polish camp with a victory in heat 18, while Wood could only muster a third, with Joe Finch between them, and the smiles were even wider when Maciej Tercjak delivered the result the Poles needed in heat 19 when he beat England’s Nick Ambrose to leave Poland 4 clear with one race to go, and the Polish squad raced out and gave Tercjak the bumps, and the fans on the terraces went wild. Congratulations to World Team Cup Champions Poland.
With 1 race to go there was still everything to play for in the final in terms of the order for the podium, and who takes home the silver or bronze medals.
Heat 20 saw pole Irzyk make a blistering start, but he ran slightly wide on the second lap and Liam Reay dived up the inside, with Bridges in third, and Blanc tailed off in fourth before eventually retiring, that race leaves the final result of Poland taking the Gold, England take silver, with the Celtic Nations a creditable Bronze.
