The 2016 season promised much for a quick UL return, but the effort needed faded in the final weeks. Failing at the final hurdle was a bitter pill, but a motivation to stay the course in 2017.
The rider line-up was crafted to bring a mix of talent, experience and energy that the management believed could 'get the job done' this season.
Unfortunately, as the Wolston fans will be painfully aware, the team failed to click in the early meetings - leaving a worrying bottom position in the league. There can be no excuses for this and both team and management must take responsibility.
A first act has been to strengthen and reorganise the team. With many of the riders seeing a fall in averages, this gave scope to bring in a boost to the main body of the team. Sadly, young Hamish Hamilton was asked to make way to allow this to happen. The management moved to bring in Whitby's Jon Scotney on loan, tasking him with a key heat leader role.
Wolston boss Tim Scott said, "We've dropped the ball big time this season and we need to fix this. We've had some solid performances and also some below-par ones too. It's not my style to single out riders for public comment, though - they all know the score. We have all discussed the situation and I'm encouraged by the determination to fix things. We've brought Jon in to bolster the main body. This has also seen Renato drop to reserve. With his ability this could give us a trump card in meetings. Hamish was sad to be dropped, but he understood the need and we thank him for his efforts. We may be bottom right now, but the points gap to the promotion spots isn't that big, so whilst a big ask, we still have this as our goal!"
