It is a tough life being a promoter. While the fans and riders celebrate finishing 2nd in our debut season in the UL, as a promoter, I have to already start looking at next season.
I know it is an old cliche, but I would love to bring all 7 riders back. I know that averages stop that, considering we ended on 46.82, and we have to lose a couple of points, but the riders bonded as a group, and this is something I will look to in who I bring back.
I have to be realistic, I would love Olle back, but his parent team have won promotion, and I am sure that they will want to use him. If he hands in a transfer request, then we would love to look at bringing him back, but I am not going to step on any toes. If he wants to go back to Teesside, and they want him back, there is little we can do.
Ryan joined us on loan, but there was always an intent to make that transfer permanent. How this will go with Owlerton bowing out of the league is anyones guess, but I will definitely be having words, because he has been a fantastic captain and experienced head in the league, and he is still one of the best riders in the World.
Henrik is an asset, and improved again this year. He put around 3 quarters of a point on his average, and learned a lot from riding with Ryan, but also cementing himself into the middle order of the team. I think next season he will need to look at be pushing on and challenging for a place at 1 or 5, but he has the ability and the drive to do that. I would love for him to be back, and will be sitting down with him in the next couple of days to try and sort a deal.
Then we have Gabrys. Gabby is someone I knew from managing Poland at senior level, and is an incredible talent. We were fortunate enough to bring him in during the season, and he was a revelation for us, and I know he is happy being here, and happy having a manager who he knows at an international level. I want to bring him back, and I know he wants to be back, but it depends on international clearance and the like. I want him to be a part of Tunstall for seasons to come.
Pawel and Josef both took to their first season in the UL well, with Josef being the more impressive, especially considering he averaged more away from home than at home. Pawel was strong at home though, but we will see what happens with them both. They are both talented riders, and riders who will do well wherever they are.
Finally, Enzo. He joined us in midseason and took a while to settle, but once he settled, you couldn't stop him. A prodigious talent who seems at home on the wide open spaces of Tunstall, and one who we want to bring back. We will look at the make up of the team and see what we can do, but I know I want him back in Tunstall colours next year.
Overall, this is a tough time for me. I have a rough idea of the make up of the team that I would like, but we shall see what happens. There are always riders out of contract, and riders out of work, and these are the riders I will look to bring in to make the team stronger. It will be a busy off season, but one that I am looking forward to.
