Sweden U/21's
Fred Taylor has taken on the role of leading the young Swedes, he is currently engaged in getting another manager to join him as Fred feels the experienced gained in these competitions can take a manager a long way in Sim.
More news on this when we have it.
The Swedes are blessed with Gote Nordvall and will be using him in some of the Test matches, we have some capable riders in Blomqvist who has already been banging in the points in the Sim Leagues,Olsson , Nilsson and Lennart Axbom at 20 is given the captains armband for the first test.
The riders will all get their chances in the Test Matches Karl-Erik Sundqvist has caught the eye in our early group sessions at the Flight Path. Charles Ekberg, Torsten Lundskog, Sigvard Sundstron, Sven Ahlund, Oliver Holmstom, Vincent Jansson and Emil Westerberg have been working closely with the Estuary coaching staff.
Our boys are probably underdogs in the competition to come, for sure though we will be as competitive as we need to be when the racing starts.
GO SWEDEN GO!

WEST EUROPE UNDER 21s
New manager Andy Dixon today spoke about his excitement at taking on a new challenge.
"I'm delighted to be facing a new challenge going into this tournament. Last time I took on the Rest of the World junior side and we lifted the trophy so I think I left them in a good state at the end of that one to say the least!
It will be interesting to see how far we can push this side - another unfashionable nation but I've already seen that anything is possible at this level so why not believe. We've got some good riders and less worries about our team members being used by the Seniors than with the ROW side in the last tournament. The challenge then was to stay in the competition and hope we had our top riders available from the seniors, after which we always knew we could compete. This set of riders aren't as obviously capable of challenging the bigger nations but I'm sure we can keep them together and build up a team spirit to go further than many would expect us to.
Only Hans Benkarth is available for the Senior side and with several of their riders proven performers on the senior international stage I would hope he will be available for us when the World Cup meetings start. Hans has been called up by the Seniors to take a look at him for the first friendly, which I think is right that they do that, and as such we have left him out of our first side, even though we could use him because of the scheduling on different days. The lad is still a teenager and I don't want him to burnout. He's a star of the future for sure - this season he just missed the rostrum places in the World Under 21 Final and helped Germany qualify to the World Pairs Final where he was a reserve as they picked up the bronze medal. Basically he has proven he is our number 1 and he will be involved for the World Cup meetings so I don't feel there is any need to use him in this one when he is gaining experience against riders at senior level anyway.
We do have a couple of names we know quite a bit about with the German trio of Linden, Schutzbach and Walter and we are going to give them the chance to lead the way from the off and claim their places in the World Cup side. Neuser is another German who looked impressive in the practice session we have had leading into the test matches and he will get his chance in the next meeting for sure. The other riders making the main body of the side up in the first match will be French youngster Julien Comparin, who looks a useful prospect at just 17 years of age, and Belgian rider Guido Keusters; I have to admit I didn't know much about Guido but he has looked very fast in practice and beaten a few lads who I know are good riders at this level so let's see what he can do in these tests to keep pushing his name forward. At reserve we have Sjors Meijerink from the Netherlands and another Belgian rider, Louis Joossens, who is still only 17.
I have an idea of about 7 names I think will make up our final 5 man side for the World Cup meetings but for these lads at reserve it is a chance to make that decision a hard one for me by scoring some big points and giving me some real food for thought. I think at this level any side can get fired up and ride with pride that can raise them to another level so we will try and inspire that spirit in the camp and do something similar to what we did with the ROW side last time and confound the odds. Whether that is good enough to win the title we can only wait and see - it would take a real man's effort to do it so let's see if we can turn these boys into men over the new few weeks!
We have a pencilled in 7 for the second test match but we will wait to see how the first meeting comes out before confirming that 100% as we may want to take an extra look at someone once the dust has settled on our opener. As always we will be giving 100% to this tournament and doing the best for the riders in our squad and all the supporters of the nations who make up our side.
I'd like to sign off by saying good luck to our Seniors. With riders like Juttke, Manzbach and Zevenbergen in their side, along with a couple of others who have shown they are more than capable of competing at the highest level over the last few seasons, I think they could cause a real upset in the tournament if they ride to their full potential."

East Europe come looking to blow up the opposition as the Aussies are the first opposition in test match 1.
Without it being confirmed by the WTC committee, Steve Morgan will be leading the senior and under 21 sides this year, and he is taking a relaxed approach.
"I'm in Devon until Monday so I have left Vlad with the team sheets and the instructions of what I want to happen. I will be there for test match 2 but this was a prior engagement and I couldn't miss it... I have picked riders who I know very well from Wednesfield and UL and GP's so we see how this goes and make changes for the 2nd one. The 3rd test for both teams will be my slimmed down squad. The 21's are a right mixed bag of boys. Some UL experience in it and hopefully a gem or 2 to take back to the Kingo next season......."

The Swedish U/21 will be looked after by both Fred Taylor (Estuary Whales 2017) and Robert Jones (Necron Knights 2017) in the upcoming Test Matches and WTC.
When Fred introduced Robert to the Swedish head honcho Derek Purvis he was happy to get Robert on board, Robert made significent progress with the Penrith Knights in his first season in Sim.
Derek added "between us we will make a fist of running this once proud nation of speedway world stars".
With both managers having picked one team each and a joint effort with the third, all eyes will be on the young Swedes who come into this International window as underdogs, the reliance on a few riders will come to the fore in the third Test Match as on paper the weakest of the three selected.

"Welcome to Oz.", so started the press conference of the latest manager for the Australian National Test Team. David Grainger has been given the task of leading the team. "We are hoping for Workington on a good day, not the one that gets relegated.", joked Motorcycle Australia. "We had a disappointing Pairs event and only Irwin got as far as the GP Challenge."
Grainger confirmed he was "glad to be here. We have several young riders that have Ultimate League experience, but only the current Australasian Champion, Brad Easty (King's Lynn), will see action in the first test match against East Europe. Power League provides the heat leaders of Irwin (Wolston), Montsach (Chantry) and Isaacs (Whitby). Evolution League supplies our reserves, Woodcroft (Hull) and Casey (Iwade). We had the chance to see what our Under 21's can do, but we'll let Paul have free reign in the first set of matches. We're thinking that we could rotate in later matches, so everyone knows that they have to score points from the start. Our line up is completed by one of the most experienced test riders there is, Carl Hooper (Aberavon). We know he is 'King Kangaroo' and could ride himself into contention for a WTC spot."

NOT THE START WE WANTED BUT EXPECTED
The Swedish U/21's are a game bunch, Fred and Rob had left a message for Derek to use Gote Nordvall in the first test if he wanted, this didn't materialise and the Swedes were left with only Blomqvist to take the fight to Rob Golsby's Celtic Nations U/21's.
We (Sweden U/21's) were behind throughout the meeting and the only heat successes believe it or not were 4-2's in heats 13 and 15, when Blomqvist skilfully ran in two victories with Axbom and then Nilsson running in 3rd's.
An injury to young reserve Sundkvist after a good showing in his first race, gave his reserve partner Sundstrom a tiring night as he rode up to the tapes 7 times for his 5+1/7.
Blomqvist if there was a star was than man with 10+2/5, o the rest Nilsson 7, Olsson and Sundstron 5+1 and Holmstrom and Axbom 5 each were supportive of Blomqvist, with the injured Sundkvist 2/2.
Celtic Nations were a stronger unit and in Szczygiel (remember him the pilot JJ winner) starred as Cormack and Hoskins looked classy at reserve, with Edwards and Harkins very supportive, Dwyer and Davey 5+1/4 and 4/4 wil lfor sure have their time.
This International series is going to be a learning curve for our Scandinavian buddies.

Rest Of The World Draw Opening WC Test Match
Its a confidence boosting opener for ROW with the side drawing in the opening fixture in this years campaign. The fixture opened with a bang with the Danes scoring the first heat advantage with a 4-2 against a very experimental open pairing from ROW manager Steven Hunt who sent two youngsters against a bair of Danish big hitting bacon.
The more fire works as the teams traded 5-1's like Joshua and Hlitschko trading blows at Wembley stadium. 5-1 to ROW and the 5-1 to Denmark the fixture just had no balance in it apart from the score. In heat six it looked like we were on for another knock out heat and a 5-1 but Jens Prydtz fell on lap three and the heat was awarded to Dane Steen Eriksen with Wynton Te-Huna and Bryce Shuter grabbing the ropes to savor a 3-3.
The fixture seemed to finally see both sides find their range and heat advantages canceled each other out to see both sides finish on 45 but in speedway we dont go to a judges decision.
ROW Manager Comments
'It was a very strange order I put the guys out in tonight, and it looks like the more experienced riders were still able to score the points needed. I put some of the younger guys at 1,3,5 to see how they handled the heats against what usually mean the opposition have the best riders out in and in all honesty they did exceptionally well.'
'Next fixture we will see a better balanced side, and maybe more like we are going to see in the competition. Its all about finding the best slot for each rider and when technically you can have a high average rider at reserve it a strange choice to make. Its a good start and Im really hopefully of our challenge this year'

Not our usual start for the Celts but well done to Sweden, and our under 21 Celts who really continued to blossom. JC continues to run this small but great side who have been finalists for the last 5 years on the trot winning once and runners up. Up and coming riders will have a chance in these tests and what a big lift to have the GP World Champion in our ranks.

An excellent opening test match win for the Celtic Nations U21 side over Sweden. This win gives us great optimism looking forward to the WTC. Rhodri Szczygiel led the way with paid 12 and was well backed by Brett Harkins, Simon Edwards and Robbie Cormack. These have all staked early claims to a WTC spot. In fact this was Szczygiel's only test match for the U21s so he is available fr the senior side should they want to use him. I will be liaising with senior manager John Coles to see if he needs him for the WTC. I don't think he will but you never know.
This will give other riders a chance to come through in the next 2 matches as we switch things up. The likes of Craig Caffrey and Carl McKinlay will look to put their names in the frame for my final 4 with good performances in the next meetings.
For now I am very pleased with the lads and I do have 4 riders in mind for the WTC......but they are not set in stone.

Another loss but a closer encounter
The Robert Jones selections are nearly men.
As Nordvall started for the first time the U21's looked a little more balanced in this meeting, again though the differences between the Swedes and opposing U/21's is there to see.
As Nordvall and Blomqvist led the Swedes by example, Westerberg, Nilsson and Olsson (before he was injured) showed good support and the result gives the boys credit, shame for two maximum heat deafeats in 12 and 14 which turned the meeting over to the North Americans.

Poland .... Czech Rep ..... Finland ..... Norway .... Yours boy took one hell of a beating !!!!! One of the biggest upsets in WTC history took place as underdogs and un fancied West Europe beat the mighty Poland to win there group and win a place in the WTC final . Enzo,Sepp,Abe and Donato all played there part on track with Otto at reserve playing his part in the pits as he didn't get a ride. Manager Richard Austin was as expected over the moon with this result " After last season I needed a boost to show myself I have what it takes to be a team manager and this couldn't have been any more perfect. After giving ever rider there chance in the friendlies we spent many hours analysing those performances and came up with the semi final side that took to track . Bring on the final

The East Europe Seniors and Under 21's have made excellent progress, maps both teams got into the Run Offs in both sections.
The seniors came 2nd behind the impressive Denmark, and it needed a heat 20 win by Petkovic to secure 2nd place ahead of ROW. Top scorer was the excellent Petkovic and there were heat wins for Shirakov and Yelesnev but the team were not consistent. Manager Steve Morgan added, "to progress to the Final we need to either win races or come 2nd in heats. The odd 3rd place is ok, but last places need to be eliminated, or we will be eliminated. 6 compared to the Danes 1 says it all....."
The Under 21's followed suit with a 2nd place behind England. Morgan was enthused when he said,"Zechy and Federenko were fantastic. If we can tweak the rest of the team, we should make the Final. Either way, both teams have made progress from last year.... We will continue to ride the crest of the wave and enjoy the ride!!"

Czech under 21s in devastating form and ready for the final...
Its been a mixed bag of international fixtures for the Czech Republic but the under 21s are building up nicely as they keep up their proud record in the WTC. As always, we used the tests to give everyone a fair chance and see who was in form. One or 2 riders certainly made me think and swayed my opinion on who to pick for the WTC.
The seniors had a tough time in the qualifying round and were lacking a bit of quality. Janek Bartousek had a nightmare and we were never in the hunt. We've got a good record of bringing young riders through so hopefully we'll have increased competition for places in the next few years, as we have lost a couple of more experienced riders.
The Under 21s qualifier went right down to the wire and we still had a chance to qualify coming into the final heat, but we fell just short. However, with Bartousek dropping down from the seniors and Parizek moving into the main team we were in devastating form in the qualifier and were clear winners. All 4 riders scored double figures and have picked themselves for the final.
We won this competition 2 years ago, and were runners up last year and will go into the final full of confidence, looking to win again!
