Charlemont Chargers suffered an opening day defeat against the Dragons of Abertillery where they went down to a 49-41 loss. The meeting was close till heat 5 where The Pride were holding their own against the home side but the middle order races is where the damage was done with the Dragons pulling 12 points clear until a final 1-5 closed the gap to 8 points with the impressive Gustaffson and Moursin banging in with heavy artillery. The top big guns scored 25 of the 41 points accumulated by the chargers in what saw only the two heat leaders beat there opposite number. Mark Morrisey at reserve scored a decent return of 6 from three rides but to keep the Chargers anywhere near the pace tactical rides were needed and both Jukka and Jaques took six rides between them to keep the score respectable.

'Its an away fixture to open the season, and it was always going to be tough here to make a dent in the Dragons campaign. We have done OK today, we have had an off day for Scotty and Chris but there better riders than what the points suggest and we can kick on from this result. Ive struggled to see where they both fit, we have gone with Scott at two to give him a easier end to meetings but when your out in heat one and against the other riders big gun it could have been a knock to his confidence. At home Scott Calder will ride at number four next week and Chris at number two and it might see us get off to a heat advantage start. Its tricky and I think were finding our feet with these two, but in pre season it seemed to work well so hence why I stuck with it.'
'We know we have built a top heavy side but we hope the guys below can push on and develop, we had it wrong last year with my ambition but this year its back fully charged and we want to move forward. We are aiming for promotion but again we are such a young club and its that running before walking scenario that we dont want to be crowned with.'
'I feel a little bit bad on Mark at reserve he didn't do anything wrong tonight to loose his forth ride but when you have your 1 and 5 scoring like they are then you need to put them in. He understands that the team comes first but it was a great debut for him and he should be proud of it. We think by the first green sheet that he will move up with his average and we think that will only make us a stronger side. The bottom four riders are closely matched and we hope they will push each other and fight for those lower number jackets.'
'Its a long season ahead and hopefully in the return leg against the Dragons we have kept it close enough to get that bonus point that we hardly achieved last year, and those extra points, well you know what they make dont you.'
