Two weeks in to the new season and the Cats have made it two from two. Unfortunately though we're talking two losses from the first two meetings. One home loss and a loss on the road. After a decent pre-season including besting defending champions Wantage on aggregate over 2 legs, and managing the same feat over Bottesford in pre-season week 3, these results either side of a disappointing double-loss to Tilbury.
Week 1 of season-proper saw us welcome Bottesford for their Ultimate League debut, and what a debut it was for them as the Cats lay out the red carpet for their first UL win. A dismal start to the meeting in heat 1 proved vital for the end result with both Kryznowek and Irwin both falling, and the Cats succumbing to an opening heat 0-5. The Cats hit back with two 5-1s in the next 3 races, and a 4-2 in heat 8 pulled the Cats back into it and put them 3 clear, and it looked like things had come full-circle from the first heat debacle, but that was a false dawn, with Kryznowek continuing his poor performance with last in heat 13 and Keyse only able to pick up second meaning the Bullets pulled back to just a point behind. Leonard and Betts pulled the Cats back to 3 clear, but the same pairing were unable to avoid a 5-1 in heat 15. And so it was, the Heat 1 debacle proved to be the difference, with the 0-5 turning a draw into a home loss.
Slightly less surprising was the Cats leaving Lanarkshire with nothing in week 2. Always a nightmare place to go to, especially for the Cats, however Milton Keynes were well and truly in the mix taking the lead through a heat 1 4-2, and after being pegged back by the home side, the Cats retook the lead with a 5-1 in heat 7. The lead was immediately overturned in heat 8 and Lanarkshire pulled further ahead with a 4-2 but again the Cats fought back and the scores were level going into heat 13. As against Bottesford though the Cats were dire in heat 13 and fell to a 5-1, and again to a 5-1 in heat 15, with Kryznowek and Baranov unable to get the better of Wood & Eriksen. In spite of winning 8 of the 15 races the Cats returned home with nothing but an 8 point loss.
So the Cats are pointless after 2, and in week 3 host old foes Teesside, before again facing off with the Transporters in the Knockout Cup in week 4. Will their luck change or will the pointless run continue?
