Week 8
EL – 1338 rocked up at the Richmond Arena as near top and form team Richmond hosted near bottom, though the visiting Border Braves turned the form book on it's head and came close to a surprise win on the road. The Braves were well in the meeting and led by 2 points after 8 heats, a Gary Curtis/Sam Woodcock 1-5 in the first reserve race edged them ahead and Richmond, so classy at home thus far were far from convincing. However the recent signing, Brynmor Johns, combined with Alex Van Maurik in Heat 9 to swing the score to a two point lead for the some side. A Ryan Roy and Craig Caffrey 5-1 in the Heat leaders race pushed the Cheetahs 42-36 ahead but Ross Flooks and Curtis bettered Lewis Holden and Johns in Heat 14 to set up a grandstand finale. Braves' No.1 Duje Jukic flew out of the traps to lead going into turn one of the final race with the visitors needing a huge 1-5 to grab a share of the spoils, unfortunately for the Croatian though, team mate Mike Caldwell missed the start and Roy and Caffrey then spent the next three and a half laps team riding to keep Caldwell at bay and sensibly take the win. Border's Gary Curtis supported Jukic magnificently and he secured man of the match award with his paid 11 as the Braves' reserves outscored their counterparts by 12+3 to 4+1.
PL – 1760 came together at Camelot Arena as the home side Chantry Crusaders cruised to a comfortable win over the travelling Foxhall Vikings. Crusaders fans were impressed with the start made as a reserves race 5-1 was followed by another in heat 3, as new signing Bjorn Haagensen tucked in behind Brage Moller-Bech and held off Guido Keusters and Russ Julian to grab his first paid win on debut. Haagensen had a solid start and a hEat 5 retirmenet apart, looked a steady signing scoring 6 from his other three races. Foxhall's promoted No.1 Wynton Te-Huna had a night to forget as he was plagued with mechanical gremlins, a non starter in Heat 1 as his missed two minutes, Te-Huna's woes continued as he struggled to get his second bike set up in his remaining three rides as he finished with and uncharacteristic 3+2 tally.
UL – 2227 marched to the Meadows Raceway to witness home outfit Wolston Warriors bounce back in style to beat their guests from Wantage 50-40, to claim their first points of the season. Debutantes Enzo Innacone and Reznich Baluk were dependable if not spectacular, but that solidity is exactly what Wolston have been searching for thus far. Italian Innacone, picked up from Bottesford in the break week won three of his opening four races, giving the Wolves the spearhead they needed, going on to finish with 10 points, whilst Baluch approached his fourth ride on a paid maximum only to see three exhausts ahead of him at the first turn of Heat 14 as he missed his start and couldn't make inroads. Wantage new boy Maciej Tercjak had a disppoining start to his KIngs career with a flurry of third places, but he is without question far better than that and Wantage will surely soon see the best of their Polish loanee. Meanwhile young Alex Golden was the home hero, as he continues his good start to 2020 with paid 13 including an impressive nominated heat win as he beat Kings' Kenni Algreen and team mate Innacone, to secure a 4-2 and an important milestone for the Warriors.
AWAYS
Newmarket Raiders 40 Blunsdon Bombers 49 - The Bombers came up trumps on the road with a much needed away win @ Newmarket and had every one of their 7 raiders paid for a race win and scored well throughout, despite the loss of reserve Bradley Wilson in a high speed clash with Raiders' reserve Tommy Barnes in Heat 8 that saw Barnes excluded and Wilson withdrawn with muscle injuries. At that stage the visitors edged it at 23-24 but a huge 1-5 in the following heat from Jason Hoskins and Chris Holmes over Antoni Brozek and Johannes Flood pushed the margin to 5 in favor off the Bombers. Egyptian, Ibrahim Mersel had a busy start to his British career as Newmarket's new reserve made paid 5 from 6 races, whilst Blunsdon's Swedish recruit, Oscar Albertsson fared better with an encouraging paid 10 on his debut.
Maximums
Faultless scoring was at a premium this week with just the one full house - Kings lynn's inspired choice of guest for the injured Kenneth Krogh, Jean-Marc Struthers grabbed 15 from his 5 starts in the Norfolk side's 49 -40 home victory over Tweedside, making a few manager's take notice in the process. He will surely pick up a few more guest bookings at least on this showing.
Injuries
Sean Mullins (Tilbury Dockers) - Fell heavily and suffered broken ribs and endured a bumpy ride to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital - Misses 3 weeks
Michael Plant (Kings Lynn Lightning) - Plant was withdrawn after a nasty crash and briefly joins Kenneth Krogh on the sidelines - out for one meeting
Bradley Wilson (Blunsdon Bombers) - Pulled muscles in his abdomen - Out for 3 weeks
Lance Geran (Aldershot Apaches - The Southern outfit's recent signing, had two successive falls in his two rides in the narrow home win over Whitby - but will be ok nest week
That's Yer lot for this week folks - stay safe
