An aggregate loss to Wolston but these matches were more about the guys getting back up to racing speed and getting used to each other. A much changed side from last season gelled really well and lots of help and advice was being shared. In the home leg it was good to see Brad Easty quickly coming to terms with the Glaven Arena scoring paid 9. It was a shame that Kalle Mikkelsen landed heavily on his hip in heat 1 and had to pull out of the meeting but I would rather he be fit for the start of the season proper than carry on injured in a challenge match. Jean-Marc Struthers rode well for paid 9 but the star of the show was Peter Doyle who had 6 excellent rides from reserve to score 14 points. He could be our trump card in the early part of the season although I don't think he will be at reserve for too long on that evidence.
In the away leg we went down quite heavily. Our top 2, Martin Shaw and Erik Davidsson, lead the way with the others riding ok without riding very consistently. It was encouraging, however, to see 17 year old Kenneth Krogh record a race win in heat 2. This will help his confidence no end show him he can mix it at this level. He will be having some coaching sessions with Mariusz during the week as will Peter Doyle, Kalle Mikkelsen and Brad Easty. Joining them will be our JJ rider Nick Turner as he embarks on his first season of competitive action. He doesn't live far from the stadium, about 40 minutes away, and has some good backing from his family. He will be off to see the NSSPA coaches for his first session with them before the season starts to see if they can give him some useful pointers.
