The Aberavon Gems start the defence of the title with only four of the winning side retained due to points averages. Great news for all Gems followers is Richie Sampson is now a full Gem following his full transfer from Whitby. Kenni Algreen is back more great news. We have also retained Aleksander Jelen and Carl Nordahl. Carl really came good in the latter stages of the season justifying his inclusion this season.
With the way Carl settled in we went back to Sweden for both our reserves joining us are Walter Bengtsson and Charles Ekberg both are in their twenties. Concluding the line up is Martin Duffy joining us on loan fron Necrons.
Promoter JC and coaches Edwards & Hooper are pleased with the side and hope the newcomers can hit the track straight away scoring points.
Carl Price has gone out on loan to the PL with Bolsover

Bottesford kept it close upto heat 12 when the Gems moved up a gear.

We 3 away to Necrons who always give tough but exciting meetings. Kenni Algreen and Richie Sampson both returned from GP duty in the USA round 1. The Gems lost 48-42 Scores for the Gems GEMS 42 1. Kenni Algreen............. 2 3 2 3 3 3 16 2. Martin Duffy.............. 1* 0 Fx - - - 1+1 3. Aleksander Jelen.......... 1 1 3 2 2 2* 11+1 4. Carl Nordahl.............. 3 0 0 - - - 4+1 5. Richie Sampson............ R 2 1* 1 0 - 4+1 6. Walter Bengtsson.......... 2 0 Fx - - - 2 7. Charles Ekberg............ 1* 2 1 1* - - 5+2
Richie admitted now in the GP Series he was tired and needed to add to his bikes to keep scoring for the Gems and to be competitive in the GP Series although he did make quite a start finishing Runner up overall. The lads did well coming back from 10 points down after heat 12, Aleksander Jelen after two thirds came back to the form we know he can do. Necrons scored throughout their side which helped them win.

With two riders in the GP Series this season the Gems have plenty to keep their supporters entertained. Both Kenni Algreen and Richie Sampson are in it this year. And both made a cracking start in round 1 in North America.
Richie finished second in the scoring and second in the final. Kenni was fifth in the scoring and got into the Semi final 2.
Great start to GP for both. On a Welsh note along with Richie, Rhodri Szczygiel got to the final to a great night for Wales also two riders in the final..

Home this week to Newmarket and the Gems only managed a 45-45 draw. Richie Sampson was in fantastic form scoring a 15 point maximum. Scores: 1. Kenni Algreen............. 3 2 2 0 - - 7 2. Martin Duffy.............. 1 1* 2 0 - - 4+1 3. Aleksander Jelen.......... 3 0 1* 3 1 - 8+1 4. Carl Nordahl.............. 0 2 2 3 - - 7 5. Richie Sampson............ 3 3 3 3 3 - 15 6. Walter Bengtsson.......... 0 0 0 - - - 0 7. Charles Ekberg............ 2 1 0 0 1 - 4
Martin Duffy got some points 4+1 and deserves it after working hard with the Gems coaches Edwards and Hooper. Walter Bengtsson had his worse meeting drawing a blank all evening. The Gems never were in front all evening but both sides created a great night's racing with Richie in unstoppable form the supporters were hoping heat 13 with Kenni Algreen partnering a 5-1 was on the cards but Newmarket pairing had other ideas team riding to keep Kenni at the back.

Week 8 and the return to racing following the week off for new averages and teams re-declaring their line ups the gems were away to Wolston and came away with a 42 - 48 win. which was a good result with 3 new debutants in the side, more about the changes later.
Gems scores:
ABERAVON GEMS 48
1. Kenni Algreen............. 3 2 1 3 3 2* - 14+1
2. Laurie Campbell........... 1 0 0 - - - - 1
3. Richie Sampson............ N2 2 3 3 - - - 8
4. Carl Nordahl.............. 1 0 1 2 - - - 4
5. Aleksander Jelen.......... 1* 3 3 2* 3 - - 12+2
6. Tobias Dahl............... 1* 0 1 - - - - 2+1
7. Curt Jensen............... 2 0 2 2 1 R - 7
The new averages saw Kenni Algreen keeping his number 1 slot, Richie Sampson slipped slightly from his own standards and clearly his investment in new bikes to assist his GP racing will let his home bikes not suffer to much strain on equipment. Aleksander Jelen moves to 5 and is really good form, Carl Nordahl continues to perform well at 4.
Following Nordahl success when joining last season we decided to raid Sweden again and sign Walter Bengtsson and Charles Ekberg sadly the lads although great to have around found the UL tough going, Martin Duffy also didn't settle to this level of racing and his loan was sadly ended. With support from HQ we have signed Laurie Campbell, Tobias Dahl a Norwegian rider and Dane Curt Jensen who has ridden in Denmark with Algreen .
The whole side are assets of the club and looking to bond quickly to form a really good side. On another rider who is a Gems asset Carl Price is now number 1 for his loan club as at 20myears old has a great future, well done Carl in your first season in the PL.

Week 10 and the Gems welcomed Birmingham to the West Coast Arena, the Gems ended the meeting 54 - 36 winners.
ABERAVON GEMS 54 1. Kenni Algreen............. 3 2 1* 2 - - - 8+1 2. Laurie Campbell........... 0 X 2* 2 - - - 4+1 3. Richie Sampson............ 2* 3 3 3 X - - 11+1 4. Carl Nordahl.............. 3 2* 2* 3 3 - - 13+2 5. Aleksander Jelen.......... 2 3 2 1* - - - 8+1 6. Tobias Dahl............... 1 1 0 - - - - 2 7. Curt Jensen............... 3 0 3 2* 0 - - 8+1
The new line up with a trio of newcomers is knitting well and since the averages change Sampson & Nordahl have formed a powerful pairing as this meeting showed as the both top scored and in there 3 races together scored 5 - 1wins in all three. Carl Nordahl also got a paid maximum.
It was great to see a gate of 2,000 in the Stadium for the meeting.
