London Jets kicked off their Academy League campaign with an excellent home victory against Stone Cross Stars, whom many predict for honours at the end of the season. The Jets won by 6 points, 48-42, and it was home number 1 Scott Allen who topped the scoring charts with 14, and he was ably backed by Vaclav Cervenka (paid 11) and reserve Chad Wilkin (paid 10)
In front of a healthy crowd of over 600, the home side had 6 riders with wins or paid wins, making it a good all round team performance.
Alan Baylee said afterwards, "That was a good positive start. The lads dug in, and even though Charlie at number 2 scored only 3 paid 4, he still worked as hard as the others, and he has he ability to knock up some big scores this season. It was a little disappointing that Stone Cross only brought 1 coach of fans, when they had been bragging about bringing 4, and that fickleness could easily spread from the crowds into the pits as the season goes on, so it will be interesting how they go. But lets not detract from what my lads have done. That was a good win, 9 race winners, and number 1 who looks as good as anything in this league, and in Vaclav, someone who can quite easily end up getting up to 9-9.5 a meeting. As long as the rest of the boys carry on working hard, this season could end up being a really positive one for us, and we could end up in the end of season mix up at the top with the determination carrying throughout the season......"
In the JJ South, it was Mitchell Spink,, the 15 year old Jets asset, who came 2nd in the 1st Round, scoring 11 points. It was home boy Ashley Wakerley who won the meeting with 13 points, leaving Spink in 2nd place.
Franchise owner Steve Morgan added, "This is a great result for Mitch. The kid is learning each day, each time he spends in the saddle, and he will benefit from having 2 homes, here in London and also having the use of the Kingo Arena, which is a little tighter and more technical. He has made a great start this season, and we all hope he continues in this vein of form."
