Wednesfield Wanderers, sponsored by Welding Services, suffered an opening day loss at the Wilkinson Field of home team of Canvey island, losing 49-41. Boris Dvoynev top scored with 16 points from 6 rides, but the support was sporadic at best, with only Jon Nysted and Dylan Goess recording race wins. Manager Steve Morgan said after the meeting, "We need to be more pro active with set up changes and track conditions changing. We ran in far too many last places and I must admit that I am disappointed with the performances in the engine room, and am expecting a big improvement. On a positive note, Boris Dvoynev was absolutely tremendous. You can see why he was a Euro League winner at Moscow, and I am hoping his professionalism will rub off on his team mates sooner rather as we have another tough trip away at Hampden and we need to see an improvement and force a tighter match through all 15 heats. We cant be reliant on one rider doing everything. The guys seem positive after our meeting and we shall go and give it our best shot...."
