Below is the result of the British Youth (U14) Final contested by riders who will be on the JJ draft list for next season. This is to let managers who will need to make a pick next season aware of the youngsters who are looking to have the potential to make the step up and make an impact in next season's competition. That doesn't mean you should disregard the riders who finished in the bottom half of the scorers as they will go away from this and work on what they need to do catch the top riders. There will be other riders who did not ride in this Final who will be on next season's list so this is for you to refer back to as a guide when looking for a rider to represent you in the JJ. I will also make you aware that riders in next season's JJ who have experience of already riding in the series will obviously have an advantage over new riders coming in. That doesn't mean that the new youngsters can't do really well as we have seen this season with the likes of Ray France, Tommy Davey and Lewie Carr. So be careful with your picks when the time comes.
Anyway onto the Final and it was an excellent meeting with lots of close racing in front of a decent crowd resulting in a win for Marcus Jay (South). He was beaten by another Southern rider, Chris Ford, in his opening ride but then had 3 superb wins. This meant a second place in his final ride would be enough for victory and this he duly did by wisely settling in behind Richie Harrington (North) for the 2 points required. Second place on the podium went to Ryan Betts (Midlands) who also had 3 wins in his 12 points after finishing third behind Ford and Jay in heat 2. Betts finished a point ahead of third placed Harrington who, after a slow start, finished with 2 fine wins and 11 points. Harrington had come over from Ireland to compete and another young Irish lad, Damien Flaherty (Midland), showed good promise to finish fourth with 10 points. Behind Flaherty there were 3 riders on 9 points, Ford, Nick Turner (Midland) and Scottish youngster Robbie Cormack (North). Turner in particular had an up and down meeting with 3 wins and 2 lasts while Cormack was more consistent after a last place in his first ride. Another 3 riders had 2 wins apiece interspersed with less convincing rides and these were Logan Bremner (North), Matt Coombes (South) and Michael Plant (Midlands). They all showed some promise though and will look to become more consistent when they enter the JJ series. The other young riders all gave their best and I can see a couple of them learning from this meeting and coming back stronger next season.
