Wednesfield Wanderers, sponsored by Welding Services Limited, faced a long trek up to Hampden in Week 2 of the season. A 10 point defeat didn't help the mood of manager Steve Morgan, as apart from Jamie Vaughan (14 from 5 rides) and Boris Dvoynev (paid 13 from 6 rides) the team didn't fight for enough of the minor places to make the meeting a closer affair.
Morgan said after that meeting, before flying out the country to South Africa, "The team overall were a disappointment. Again, we have had 2 riders scoring nearly half the total points, and it is not acceptable to be carrying on like this. We ran in 7 last places, which isn't disasterous, but only Jamie or Boris won a race, no one else was close. Dylan (2 from 4) Janne (paid 3 from 3) and Kristian (1 from 3) need to be getting amongst the points sooner rather than later, as later never comes for speedway riders..."
It was a different story at the Kingo Arena for the first home meeting of the season.
A record League crowd of 1127 witnessed a home win by 6 (48-42) and putting 2 much needed points on the board.
Again it was the top 2 of Boris Dvoynev (14 from 5 rides) and Jamie Vaughan (9 from 5 rides) but the support team were much better with race wins coming from Goess, Hayes, 2 from Nysted and a paid win for Sarjale. Morgan added, "these are concerning times for Kristian Stemme. In the 3 league meetings, he has notched 2 points from 11 rides, which is not the form of a rider who I know can be an 8 point average rider. We will be siting down on Monday, and discussing where we go from here. I think it is more a confidence issue, as the dip in form is huge compared to what I know he is capable of....the rest just need to be re-acting quicker to set up changes, especially away from home, and I am looking for a good positive at home in the first leg against Canvey Island and then we can fight for every point in the return leg. I would love us to do well in this Cup this year, and go on to win a Trophy this season, even though our priority is the League Title....."
