After their K.O.Cup defeat to Canvey Island, Wednesfield Wanderers, sponsored by Welding Services, got their league campaign up and running with an impressive away draw 45-45 at Glastonbury, and followed that up with a 4 point home win against Chantry.
At The Shot Stadium, home of Glastonbury, it took a last heat 5-1 by Boris Dvoynev and Jamie Vaughan which yielded an away point.
Dvoynev was in scincillating form with paid 17 from 6 rides and he was ably backed by Vaughan who was also beaten only once by a home rider to score 14 points from 5 rides. Morgan added, "these 2 are in fantastic form. We didn't have any other race winners, but points were hard fought for minor places. The number 6 race jacket seems to be a poison chalice at the moment, as it was Nysted's turn to not get a point there!!! Him apart, the fought hard for their rewards and a point is a great result for us...."
Wenesfield's next meeting was only their 2nd home meeting of the season, and again, a crowd of over 1000 people saw the home team maintain their unbeaten home record with a 47-43 against Chantry. Again it was Boris Dvoynev and Jamie Vaughan who scored paid 14 and 14 respectively. There was also race wins for Nysted, back at number 7, and Phil Hayes and also paid wins for young boys Sarjale and Goess. Morgan said afterwards, "we started brightly with an opening 5-1, but soon found ourselves 4 points down after 4 races. But we chipped away and it took another last heat 5-1 by Boris and Jamie to give us our 4 point win. We are not convincing at home, and Glastonbury apart we look feable away from home. I'm guessing changes will happen to my team, as we just don't seem to be clicking any sort of form, with the exception of Boris and Jamie who are really the glue to holding things all together at the minute. This is proven with both in the top 4 league averages.........we lack a bit of stability mid order, so we will see what to do after Stockport. This is a really important meeting for everyone at the Club. I would rather not be making changes, but we need to be not relying as much on Boris and Jamie as we are doing......Stockport bring along Maciej Tercjak, who is leading the averages, so it will be interesting how he shapes up against my 2 big boys at the Kingo. I'm expecting another bumper crowd as we look to rise further up the table....."
It was also to the amazement of Wednesfield Supremo Steve Morgan, when he found out about his superstar number 1 Boris Dvoynev, winning the first GP of the season in North America. Morgan added, " gobsmacked to be honest.! Boris is a quiet guy, very balanced, but when I heard he won well that's just totally amazing. I should have hailed the guy a couple of weeks ago, but with everything going on it has been on the back burner a little bit......I also don't want to rattle too many UL managers, as they will be gutted at having missed out on Boris. He has created a bit of history by being the first Power League rider to win a GP, so everyone should be realy proud of what he has achieved..."
