PART 1
Hi, I'm John Honey and I ride for Rpwley Raptors in the Juvenile Jaunt-Midlands north Section.
Sorry I started my diary late but my Dad said I had to get a Summer job in my Uncle's butchers shop to help pay towards my Speedway exploits. Also, I haven't been able to go to the NSSPA Coaching School yet, but now I'm back at school I hope to go in the next couple of weeks.
This is my first season in the Juvenile Jaunt so I didn't know quite what to expect as my dad drove the van into Charlemont's All saints Stadium. We got all my equipment ready and I changed into my kevlars which Rowley's sponsers, Midland Motorcycles, gave me and I didn't have long to wait for my first ride as I was in Heat 2. As I rode round to the tapes I could hear the crowd cheering for their favourites , which included some Raptors fans . We were up at the tapes and the lights in the stadium went out and I was waiting for the race light to turn green when I seemed to freeze and before I knew it there were 3 riders in front of me and I suddenly took off so fast that I went very wide at the first bend and after four laps of being filled in by shale I finished last!
I managed to score a point in each of my next two rides so me and my mechanic made a couple of changes to the bike , which seemed to work as I finished second in each of my last two rides for a total of 6 points. It was great to get that first meeting under my belt and chat to some of the other riders. Me and dad stopped off at McDonalds on the way home to celebrate!
Join me next time when I race on my own track at Rowley for Round 2 and see if I improved and I get some good advice.
This Diary is written by Terry Meech with the kind permission of Tim Foster and Midlands Motorcycles.
