The Bottesford Bullets climbed off the foot of the league with a real team effort to defeat the high flying big boys, the London Jets.
Missing Zoltan Stepukhin though injury, Bottesford fans must have thought they were up against it, with the team hastily re-shuffled and young Ricky Ede making his track debut for the Lincolnshire side, Against the high flying visitors from the Capital. However in another entertaining affair at the Bullet Arena, Bottesford got off to a decent start to lead 12-6 after 3 heats.
Martin Greer, promoted to number one after a fine start to the season, had a wretched start and ran a last place, but team mate Hamish Hamilton showed some real form to go in between the visiting pairing of Scott Allen and Jamie Airey on the third bend and show real craft to hold off Allen for three laps to share the spoils in the opening race.
Ede then showed his potential by storming to a debut win in his first ever race at the BA , Jets' Chad Wilkin was second with Will Stone, who had dropped to reserve, finishing 3rd for a home 4-2. Heat 3 was even better for the home fans as Hamilton, revelling in the third Heat leader role, was followed home by Lewie Carr for a big 5-1 over Cervenka and Imbert.
After a couple of shared heats, Greer and Stone, in as rider replacement, claimed a huge 5-0 as first Wilkin and then Tom Hennesy retired.
With Bottesford 11 ahead, Allen was cast into Heat 8 as a tactical replacement for the hapless Charlie Noone, however Cartwright and debutant Ede made sure the race was shared. A 9th race Hamilton / Carr combination saw a 4-2 over Hennesy and tactical sub Vaclav Cervenka ,stretching the lead to 13 points with the Jets out of tactical options.
London rallied to win the last 5 heats by a margin of 11-19 points but the early damage by the hosts had been terminal on the night as they ran out comfortable winners by 47-42 to claim the match points.
Team Manager Paul Duff was justifiably proud of the efforts of his sextet, "We were up against the odds after losing Zoltan in a week where we made team changes and then had to operate rider replacement. However the response from the lads was magnificent. Martin Greer has performed miracles for us this season, but by his high standards he had a quietish night, still he crucially won two big races and the effort they all showed saw us home against a visiting team who would have fancied their chances tonight,"
Duff was keen to put the focus on teamwork and togetherness, despite a very encouraging home debut for new loan signing, Rocky Ede and the man of the meeting, Hamish Hamilton.
"Hamish has done great for us so far, and seemed to revel in the responsibility, showing great temperament to be sat on paid 14 after 5 rides. The whole team scored solidly. I tried to sign Ricky Ede at the start of the season and again during the average changes, I have huge belief in him and he showed what a good lad he is to score paid 8 on his track debut. We actually only provided 8 race wins tonight but the real telling statistic was that we avoided finishing last in 11 of the 15 races, that's how to win the meetings, home or away."
Next up the Bullets have a tough assignment in the 4's, relying on qualification to be in the main billing, before a trip to take on the Rowley Raptors, where they'll be eagerly seeking their first away league points of the season.
