A resurgent Bottesford reach a lofty 2nd - But the hard work is just beginning
BOTTESFORD BULLETS 55 (96) CHARLEMONT CHARGERS 35 (84)
Another solid home team performance from the Bullets as they saw off the Chargers with a resounding 20 point win. The win was based on solid scoring throughout and perhaps the most telling statistic was that whilst the hosts provided 9 race winners to Charlemont's 6, they only ran a last place in 3 of the 15 heats.
"It's something we have been discussing of late !" said team Captain Mike Cartwright, "Avoiding zeros Home and Away is key to solid scoring, we are gelling better now and there's a real camaraderie coming to the fore. I'm a little disappointed to have only scored 6 personally, but the rest of the lads are playing their part and it seems we are looking after each other that way. I hope it lasts all season"
Cartwright did come away with two race wins in the latter stages of the meeting where the hosts, after a relatively close first half, proved to be too strong for the visitors.
Charlemont were hindered a little when losing their top rider, Neil Johnson, after a heavy fall in Heat 13, following a retirement in his previous race, restricting him to 8 points on the night. Johnson sustain an ankle injury in a racing incident as he hit the 3rd bend alongside Martin Greer, there was seemingly no contact as Johnson took the outside line and just grabbed too much dirt before sliding off and into the air fence. The injury marred a good meeting really as nobody wants to see teams reduced by injury.
Johnson's night started brightly with a race win in Heat 1, Bottesford duo Lewie Carr, continuing his recent run of good form, and Martin Greer following in his methanol stream. Will Stone then took the flag in Heat 2 on his way to a hugely encouraging paid 14 points, only beaten by an away rider in Heat 12. Team mate Ricky Ede was unable to find a way past Ian Lennon ans the hosts bagged a 4-2 in the reserve race.
In form Hamish Hamilton and the resurgant Zoltan Stepukhin then raced to a big 5-1 over Ewald Dirtl and Wayne Douglas to stretch the lead to 6 after three heats. Racing was pretty close in the following few heats, before Charlemont gave the home fans a real scare as Dirtl and the impressive Chris Williams headed Stepukhin and Hamilton home to reduce the gap to 4 points with the Linclonshire side leading 29-25.
Any hopes the visitors had of glory was then blown away by four 5-1's by Bottesford in the next 5 races. Cartwright finding his racing line in two of those, as first, he and Stone and then, he and Greer took the fight to the Chargers.
Will Stone was delighted with his return and rightfully was named Starman by the sponsors from Young's Motors ! - The youngster was quick to express his delight at the end of the meeting. "I'ts been a long while coming, has this. I have been riding ok but it really clicked into gear today. I'ts definitely helped dropping into reserve as I have started to get into a racing rythmn and my confidence is good. I'd love to get a maximum this year, that's my goal, but as long as we are improving as a team I'm more than happy. I'd like to dedicate the accolade from the sponsors to the other 6 lads, they are always behind me 100%"
