England manager wasted no time in outlining his ambitions over the next 3 weeks with the 3 Test Matches and the WTC. He said." We want to win every Test and the WTC!!" With England looking particularly strong 1 to 12, Morgan added," I have a pretty good idea what my WTC squad looks like. But this journey involves the whole squad, and we will keep the 12 together throughout. There are plenty opportunities for anyone to stake a claim but you struggle to look beyond the top average rider in the UL and World Champion Liam Reay, who has also recently added the World Pairs title to a great season with Hayden Wood. Them you chuck in the pot double World Champ Nick Ambrose and then there are 6 or 7 great contenders as well. We will be looking to put last years loss to one side and look to get a Gold Medal at the end of it.....well that's the plan anyway!!!!"

Following up from the England manager's bold claims, albeit backed rather strongly statistically, the new Australia manager Sean Wood was rather less bullish "We'll do what we can. Looking around we don't have the strongest squad, but this is the World Cup, and anything can happen, and every rider that goes out there for Australia will have immense pride in wearing the suit, and when a rider is in that kind of mindset, they can achieve incredible things."
"We're very much in a building phase for Australian speedway, you look at the Under 21s and you've got to say the talent is coming through, but they'll take time."
"In terms of this year, our target is the final, that would be the dream result, to make it that far. In regards to the Test Matches, we're not aiming to win them. It would be nice but that's not the aim, we're giving every rider in each squad opportunities to race for Australia, and we'll make decisions on the World Cup teams based in part on performances here. Nothing is decided yet, I have ideas, but there is room for changes."

Celtic Nations, gave all the squad some race time while JC looked at all permutations for the main event, with 2 wins out of the 3 meetings, it's nice to have positive troubles. Some riders who in the passed have sometimes struggled like Andy & Alex showed great riding to score well. JC usually has his top 4 pick themselves and really only has to pick the right 2 reserves but this year its different as about 5 will be really chasing the two remaining places to partner Captain Bridges and Treadwell.
Its going to be a great challenge for the World Champs to keep the title, but they won't give it up lightly.

Finland and Norway have named 7 man squads for the World Finals for both the seniors and Under-21s.
Head coach Graeme Bailey and his assistants watched on intently as the recent Test Matches were used to try out all riders, and some took their chances.
For the seniors team boss Graeme Bailey admitted he had some selection dilemmas...
"Obviously Hans and Olle are going to lead us into the World Champs, that is no surprise as they are as good a top-two as you cold hope for, I then already had Rudi Juritzen in my mind at three with the next best youngster - but Rudi had a really poor test series and didn't step up which has been surprising as he looking good in training and he has just come off the European season which saw him in the top ten for most of the year. And the pleasing thing is that we had some real positive displays from both Hannu Helinen and Carsten Ostenstad - our Under-21 heroes from last year and they have really stepped up - so it is not a bad problem."
SQUAD FOR WTC Hans E Bergestol - 9.78 from 9 rides Hannu Helinen - 8.00 from 8 rides Carsten Ostenstad - 7.60 from 10 rides Jukka Gustafsson - 7.50 from 8 rides Olle Bjorn Thoresen - 6.40 from 10 rides Yrjo Eskelinen - 4.80 from 10 rides Rudi Juritzen - 4.80 from 10 rides
Under-21s Again team boss Graeme Bailey left a bit annoyed with one of his top men. "Similar to the seniors, I think we have a couple of guys in Lasse Ruuska and Anders Solberg who we knew would be big for us, but again the third man in my mind Bjorn Haagensen had a poor time and that has made life difficult because we saw some good stuff elsewhere, again it wont be easy picking it out."
SQUAD FOR U21 WORLD CUP Lasse Ruuska - 8.36 from 11 rides Otto Berg - 7.64 from 11 rides Anders Solberg - 7.64 from 11 rides Niels Petersen - 6.86 from 7 rides Finn Grodas - 6.22 from 9 rides Lahti Rytenen - 4.36 from 11 rides Bjorn Haagensen - 4.00 from 11 rides

Wherever I may roam.... Well, I've been round the world and I finally have a country of my own to manage. I've had the Rest of the World, Rest of Europe and North America but now have the honour of managing Czech Republic at both senior and under 21 level.
With the test matches now complete I have to take the opportunity to review all of the performances with the coaches and decide who will get the nod for the WTC. There are some obvious choices at both levels but there have been some excellent performances that have given me food for thought. I have to admit that at under 21 level I didn't know a great deal about some of the lads but. 1 or 2 have definitely left a mark.
All in all I'm very happy with the performances, and although the results were of secondary importance it was nice for the u21s to remain unbeaten.
Now to make the difficult choices....

England manager Steve Morgan faced some tough decisions when picking his WTC team and reserve. He said after naming the team, "that was tough. Chris Adams is unlikely to miss out at this stage, but I couldn't leave out triple World Champion Nick Ambrose. We are also blessed to have current World Champion Liam Reay to call upon and I have had to leave world number 5 Martin Shaw as on current form Hayden a Wood and David Bedford deserve their chances. We are bang in form and look forward to a good run for the medals........"

Through to another final, you cannot fault the commitment of the Celtic Nations riders. Each year they pull it out of the bag with a small group of riders to reach the final and to even win it last season.
Manager JC said "I only the utmost respect and praise for these lads who give 110% when putting on the Celtic race suit". Whatever happens in the final we know the will give it their all.
JC keeps faith with the quartet who won through, but goes for experience at reserve with world cup winner Briggs coming in.

Run-offs all round for the Czech Republic as both sides finished 2nd in the heats. It was a good effort from both sides but in each case there was somebody slightly better than us on the day.
However we still have a great chance to make the final at both levels. The seniors, with Ludek Janicek in superb form in the heat remain unchanged. There's plenty of potential in that side and we feel if everything clicks we could make the final. The Under 21s came close to automatic qualification and are very hopeful of progressing. Again they will be led by Tibor Nemecek, a class act at this level, and Dusan Galuska gets a chance after being an unused reserve first time out.
So so a lot to ride for still. Let's hope there's joy in the Czech camp this weekend.

Finland-Norway boss Graeme Bailey admits that his adopted nation can easily now describe themselves as a world power, but not quite the number one.
"Even if we won both finals, we still wouldn't be ahead of the likes of England, Poland or some of our perceived bigger Scandinavian neighbours, but we are starting to emerge as a real force. From Hans and Olle winning the world pairs, to Hans just missing out on the world title, to now both teams not only qualifying but dominating their heats.
"And the most pleasing aspect is that we are not just relying on one rider, yes I think we have the best rider in the world in Hans - no doubt, but we are producing talent to back that up. Rudi is the only rider over 25 in our senior squad, which says it all.
"But I have told the lads, that they have won nothing yet - we are hoping to build a dynasty but we need results but the confidence is really high - all the guys are pulling in the same direction and that is all we can ask."
FINLAND/NORWAY 41 - QUALIFIED TO WORLD CUP FINAL 1. Hans E Bergestol.......... 1 2 3 3 3 12 2. Rudi Juritzen............. 2 2 2 2 3 11 3. Carsten Ostenstad......... 2 3 1 2 0 8 4. Olle Bjorn Thoresen....... 3 3 2 2 0 10 5. Hannu Helinen............. Did not ride

Jubilant! That's how I'd describe the Czech camp today as both senior and under 21s won their race offs to qualify for the WTC finals.
We had every confidence we could do it, even if there were more fancied sides. For the seniors Drahos, Janicek and captain Fortes were excellent and Stampfl weighed in with valuable points. Poland were the pre meeting favourites and although they kept it close we always had our noses in front. And when it really mattered they fell apart. I'm sure Steve will be very happy at how they finished that meeting.
But our boys held their nerve and are looking forward to shaking things up in the final. You can be assured we are going there to try and win the World Cup. We have a confident side and Janicek is world under 21 champion and Drahos a UL winner.
The Under 21s were fantastic. Every one of them rode out of their skins and qualification was never in doubt. They have picked the team for the final by making themselves undroppable. If they ride like that again this week then there is no doubt they will be in the mix.
So now it's a big week of preparation and then 2 world championships to race for!

Finland/Norway celebrated their first ever world title with Hans E Bergestol landing a full maximum. The whole team contributed with Rudi Juritzen and Olle Bjorn Thoresen both claiming 8 points and youngster Carsten Ostenstad more than held his own for his 6 point haul.
With the Under-21 side also claiming a bronze medal for third, team boss Graeme Bailey was left utterly delighted.
"It is amazing, I challenged the guys to make Finland-Norway a world power and they have done just that. Both the seniors and Under-21s are feared around the world. It is truly moving to be part of it."
FINLAND/NORWAY 37 1. Hans E Bergestol.......... 3 3 3 3 3 15 2. Rudi Juritzen............. 1 1 3 3 0 8 3. Carsten Ostenstad......... 1 1 R 1 3 6 4. Olle Bjorn Thoresen....... 3 2 3 0 R 8 5. Hannu Helinen............. Did not ride

As manager of both senior and under 21 sides for the Czech Republic I would like to congratulate all of the riders on magnificent tournaments for the country.
Obviously special praise must go to the Under 21s on an amazing victory. They are still celebrating now, although we have had to stay away from any pubs and clubs so that Vaclav Ruzucha can join in! Everyone one of them was on top form again and blew the opposition away. After starting the tournament unfancied, and even more so without the use of Under 21 champion Ludek Janicek, to win so comfortably was remarkable.
Those lads have made a name for themselves and it will be interesting to follow their progress.
The seniors should also be proud of their performance. They missed out on a podium place, but were only 2 points off 2nd. Congratulations must go to Finland / Norway and especially Hans E Bergestol who was the standout rider. Take him out of the equation and all four teams were equal.
Its been a pleasure working with these lads, and next year may well be the first time i look to keep hold of my international job!
