Wednesfield Wanderers went into their last league meeting of the season needing a comprehensive home victory and results to go their way, as the scramble for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place were up for grabs and the chance to take up their positions in the UL.
with MK Cats getting the home victory and bonus point they neede for 2nd place behind Champions Glastonbury and Canvey Island getting their home win and bonus point to cement 3rd place, it left Hampden, Chantry, Ispwich and Wednesfield fighting for 4th and the last promotion place, due to the unfortunate closure of Glastonbury.
Ispwich lost at Canvey, throwing them out the race and with Chantry and Hampden sharing a 45-45 draw and Hampden getting a bonus point, a full 3 point haul from Wednesfield would get them to 4th, and boy did they deliver......!!!!
The home team scored a top score of the season of 52 points with Boris Dvoynev (paid 14), Jamie Vaughan (paid 13), Phil Hayes (paid 11) and Dylan Goess (paid 9) scored really well to give the platform for victory. 10 race victories and only 6 last places gave manager Steve Morgan plenty to be happy with.
He said, "I am so pleased for everyone connected with the club to get the 4th place. Everyone knew, with Glastonbury closing, that 2nd 3rd and 4th would get promoted and we have snook in the back door. Well done also to MK Cats who we have followed together from the AL, so a great achievement by both clubs and also to Canvey Island. I'm so pleased for the boys. We went hop heavy this year, with 2 big hitters in Boris and Jamie, and boy haven't they delivered! Both in the top 3 averages is a great achievement. The skipper, Phil Hayes really was solid week in and week out, and me jiggling the rider order in this last match helped with Boris at 5 and Phil at 3. Dylan at 4 did fantastic and he has had a real promising season. The future is good for him. I'm pleased for everyone. I thank the loan boys, Jamie, Jon Nysted and Billy LIdlaw and also Kristian Stemme earlier in the season...now the hard work begins building a team for the Ultimate League after the WTC as we look for an England win to ice the cake!!"
