After another poor season, it is the bottom tier for the Logheads. We've been here before and, like the Great Dragon of Cumbria, we can rise again!
The basic side has been signed up. Plenty of room for improvement (we hope) and a keen sense of encouragement for the fans a good season after 2/3 indifferent ones.
Dexter Last - added almost a point to his average last season in a struggling side. Steps down a division and expected to be challenging for the #1 spot by the end of the season. Harvey Hedge - almost doubled his average at Ipswich in the extinct Academy League. Expected to make the step up in class with no problem. Guido Keusters - the only retained rider that wore the Cleator Moor red and yellow. Showed flashes and just needs to be a bit more consistent.
Shane Boulger - comes in on loan Milton Keynes after a promising JJ season. Duff, the U21 Aussie manager, thinks he might be ready to make the next step up. Logheads hope he will have the time to find out. Anders Solberg - Topped the Division 2 averages in Euro League for Zagreb. Not the hard hitting #1 we need to stay in the Power League last season, but should prove his worth in the Evolution League. The crowd love him, why sign for anyone else?
Offers have been made for the rest of the side and updated here later.

Logheads are now ready to pay their entry fee and submit tactics.
The final two slots go to:
Colin Browne - former Reading Rebel, spent a successful season on loan at Wolston. Has accepted the Captaincy and starts the season as our most experienced rider.
Logan Bremner - a former Cleator Moor rider that added over a point to his average last season, whilst on loan from Tweedside. Adds steel to the reserve berth.

To celebrate the release of the new SIM Database, we have held a little poll of the best riders for Workington, as part of the preseason get together between riders and the fans.
Not surprisingly Risager and Michanek were heavily voted for as were the more recent Black and Reay. Some of the others may be a surprise, but we hope that Last, Hedge and Ruzucha are the stars of the future.
Jesper Risager (2005 to 2010) Tomasz Michanek (2005 to 2010) Graeme Black (2005 to 2008) Mark Black (2014 to 2015) Liam Reay (2014 to 2016) Matja Petkovic (2009 to 2015) David Bedford (2007 to 2014) Tony Clipstone (2007 to 2017) Dexter Last (from 2016) Harry Hedge (from 2016) Vaclav Ruzucha (from 2016)

A new season, but the dark clouds are yet to break up over the Logheads.
Stoke gave us a thorough examination and we were found wanting (apart from Solberg). At least it is only preseason, no need to panic yet.

A pleasant away trip, unusually for Workington. There was little between the sides as both teams seemed to be trying out their equipment rather than flat out for the win. Heat 8 in Leeds and Heat 9 in Workington decided the ties, fortunately Logheads got a 5-1 in both of them.

Solberg and Hedge are warming up together well. Keusters a little inconsistent and Brown hasn't fully hit his stride, making sure the team integrates, rather than concentrating on his own performance. A decent draw at Whitby and loss at home only due to injury to Boulger and man of the match performance of Dixon. Both fixtures very entertaining and no lasting damage to Steve.

After a decent pre-season, Workington have felt the need to make a change. Struggling to achieve a 5 point average at the moment, even after 3 home matches has seen the axe fall on Colin Browne. We thank Colin for agreeing to the termination and thank him for his efforts up to this point.
His replacement, former Cleator Moor heat leader, Zane Snow. He helped the Phoenix get promoted and we are hoping for a positive impact for the Logheads.

After 6 matches, we remain unbeaten home. Close but no cigars on our travels. Seventh is not a bad place to be, will be interesting to see whether we are still competitive as other sides ring the changes.
WORKINGTON LOGHEADS 6 2 1 0 0 0 3 2 1 3 267 272 -5 5 0 - 0 5
Anders Solberg 6 31 72 2 74 9.55 Was signed last year to be the #1 and is living up to that tag very nicely.
Dexter Last 6 27 50 3 53 7.85 Finding life a little tougher back in the EL that he had hoped, but is still learning and looking to improve.
Zane Snow 1 4 6 1 7 7.00 Welcome back Zane, almost helped us surprise Foxhall.
Guido Keusters 6 27 42 5 47 6.96 Has shown great consistency and steady improvement.
Harvey Hedge 6 23 28 2 30 5.22 Flashes of greatness and raw youth, combine to make a very entertaining 'hot prospect' for our supporters.
Logan Bremner 6 25 25 5 30 4.80 Hasn't kicked on as much as we thought he might, but there is plenty of time for this youngster.
Colin Browne 5 20 22 1 23 4.60 Mutually agreed that he didn't achieve all we had hoped for. Such a nice bloke too.
Shane Boulger 6 23 22 3 25 4.35 The only non-asset and doing exactly what was asked of him, an easy rider to get along with.

We are now 11 matches in and the Derwent Advertiser asked for an interview. We declined and went to talk to the Northern Echo instead.
Anders Solberg 11 57 135 4 139 9.75 10.32 9.08 Has added consistency to undeniable ability.
Dexter Last 11 49 90 5 95 7.76 7.56 8.00 Getting back amongst the double figures and looking to end the season strongly.
Guido Keusters 11 50 82 9 91 7.28 7.41 7.13 Can be a match winner on his day, stringing some decent scores together and a potent pairing with Dexter.
Zane Snow 6 24 36 4 40 6.67 6.67 6.67 As the stats prove, Mr Consistency.
Harvey Hedge 11 43 50 5 55 5.12 4.52 5.80 This was always a season for learning and has done well to maintain his place in the top 5.
Logan Bremner 11 45 41 9 50 4.44 4.96 3.80 Sometimes lets things get too much for him, but with assistance of the Coach Harrington, we are getting a determined little rider.
Shane Boulger 11 42 36 4 40 3.81 4.70 2.74 Showing a real liking for The Derwent Bowl. Looking to get an average over 4 by end of the season.
As a team we are a point from glory and three points from hell. All members of the team are performing well as a unit and confidence remains high that a promotion tilt is still on the table.

The competitive nature of the Division was proven by a Reading side determined to avoid the wooden spoon. Michael France proving is love of the Derwent Bowl with an excellent full maximum, as Solberg slipped by his high standards.
"I think a few riders are looking to next week [KOC Final] and we had to have them in the team room for a few words after Heat 8. We're unbeaten at home and still a point from promotion. Maximum effort is all it takes now to grab both trophies", said Promoter David Grainger.
Battle Hymn of the Logheads: -
Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Workington marching on.
Gird on the warriors armour, the battle ne'er give o'er, March 'till the batter'd gates of Stoker shall appear; Rest not by the way, 'till you plant the Loghead Where the Vampires flag now waves!
Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Workington marching on.
Music: to the tune of "Glory , Hallelujah" (1861) by Phillip Simonds
